This ain't Mexico North

I’m sure some people will find this entry insensitive or maybe even racist. I usually stay away from political topics but I don’t feel this is a political issue. It is a matter of pride, American pride. This is not just about illegals from Mexico but anyone who enters the US by sneaking in.

Why are we allowing foreigners to tell us what to do in our country? When I lived in California, illegal immigrant advocates were trying to force the state to issue drivers licenses to undocumented workers. Thank goodness Californians saw that for what it was and it didn’t pass.  Now that the American Congress is trying to strengthen our immigration laws, the people who are here illegally want to cry foul. When they enter into the country through clandestine border crossings, then they are breaking the law. If they want to be here, then why not go through proper channels? Now they are protesting in the streets of our cities, waving the Mexican flag (they had to be told to carry American flags), demanding that we let them in. If they are here illegally they have no right to make demands on our local, state, or federal governments.

It seems our politicians are determined to let America go down the toilet. They are worried about courting the Hispanic vote. My personal experience (as a poll taker in San Diego, California a few years ago) is that illegals don’t vote!! The undocumented workers claim they should be able to stay because they pay their share of taxes. If they are undocumented they are not paying taxes because they don’t want to call attention to themselves. But my taxes go to pay for government forms to be printed in multiple languages; extra classes for their children who don’t speak English in school (ESL); the cost of emergencies services when an undocumented alien needs medical attention without insurance, etc etc

They talk about how good their lives are here in America. Well if that is the case, then go back across the border and apply for visas and then citizenship. Follow the law! Why aren’t they looking at their government officials such as Vicente Fox to improve the infrastructures and economies of the countries of Central and South America to make the lives of citizens better in their own countries? Why should President Fox do anything to bring up Mexico when he is telling them it is their right to come into the US? We as American citizens should be flooding his mailbox, email, and phone lines telling him to keep his people in their country. We should also be contacting our representatives and congressmen to let them know we will not stand behind a law that will allow a free ride to people who live here illegally, whether they’ve been here 1 year or 20 years. If someone has lived here illegally for 20 years and has not made any attempt to legalize their status, they should be deported.

When our government keeps us living in fear of terrorists attacking us on our own soil, we have every right to strengthen our borders. If it means putting up walls 15 feet tall embedded with glass and topped with razor wire to keep people from entering our country illegally, then so be it. Let’s put our tax dollars to work by employing more well trained/equipped border guards instead of training workers at the DMV to be multilingual.

I can see nothing good coming of this if Congress buckles under the pressure. Lest we forget the Cuban Mariel boatlifts of in the 1980’s. Castro opened the floodgates and allowed the most undesirable elements to leave Cuba to come to the US. As a result crime rates in Florida (and other places) skyrocketed. It has been said that these undocumented workers will take jobs Americans won’t do (and according to President Fox, even Blacks won’t do). If you thought outsourcing our jobs overseas was bad, just wait until companies start hiring undocumented workers to do your job for lower wages. It will totally undermine the already struggling poor and vanishing middle class.

If I should try to enter another country illegally, they will check my documents at the point of entry. If they find that I don’t have every I dotted and every T crossed, they will send my butt back to the US immediately with no regards as to whether I have a place to go when I return.   When Americans go to other countries, we are expected to behave according to local customs and laws. I never saw a little America when I lived in Greece.

I have been abroad and I understand why it is others view us as the most powerful nation in the world. I have no problem with anyone who wants to come to the US for whatever reason. But when they come they should do it by the book. With the appropriate documents and identification.  Frankly I think the INS should have had buses waiting at some of the protests sites to arrest anyone who could not show proof of being here legally and send them back to their countries of origin.
